In the fall of 1996, a tournament was held to crown the new WWF Intercontinental Champion after former champion, Ahmed Johnson was attacked and injured at the hands of Faarooq (Ron Simmons). "Wildman" Marc Mero, with a little unintentional help from Sunny would go on to hit his "Wild Thing" finisher on Faarooq in the finals on September 23rd, 1996 in Hershey, PA to become the new WWF Intercontinental Champion!
Marc Mero defeated Steve Austin and Owen Hart on his way to the finals and facing Faarooq.
