Would it work? Vince McMahon took a gamble on March 31st, 1985, by throwing the biggest wrestling show the world had ever seen up until that point. Not only was he putting on a huge spectacular event, but he was also doing it with celebrities, national exposure on closed-circuit viewing and was using MTV to hype the run up to the show. If it didn't work? We would not have the WrestleMania we have today.

Vince would put "Mr Wonderful" Paul Orndorff and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper with "Cowboy" Bob Orton in one corner. In the other... WWF Champion Hulk Hogan and the A-Team's Mr. T with "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka in their corner! Something that did not sit well with veteran wrestlers that were hesitant to share the spotlight with a celebrity not from their "world" and who hadn't paid the dues they had paid.

If that wasn't enough... Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali served as the special guest referee outside of the ring, with New York Yankees manager Billy Martin as the guest ring announcer and Liberace (featuring The Rockettes) as the guest timekeeper.

The result? The first ever WrestleMania was a huge success, leading to the annual event that is now considered the "The Granddaddy of Them All!"

And none of that happens without "Mr Wonderful" Paul Orndorff.
